Cambie St debacle...

Been on Cambie St recently? No doubt if you live here you have heard about the problem retailers are having on cambie st, as the city works on the canada line monorail extension to the airport. basically, hundreds of businesses are going broke, because pedestrians cant get to their stores...well forget pedestrians, driving this gauntlet is bad enough, and the worksite is nothing short of a FCKING DEBACLE. You really have to drive over there to get an idea of how disorganized and screwed up the lane redirections and temporary traffic guides are. There is ZERO organization, everyday you drive it, there are different roads closed and different one way sections, no left turns. The funniest thing is I am sure if you went out there at 2am and changed the locations of the markers, orange hats and signs, no one would notice and you could pretty much redirect traffic where ever you want.

It's been awhile, I was on strike!

No I am not satisfied with things here, i haven't run out of things to complain about, I was simply away travelling. Whats next on my hitlist you ask? This idiotic city strike. You know the funniest part of the strike, the only thing that affected me throughout the process was the grass in park infront of my place is a little longer than usual. Bottom line, we should let the strikers go... i read somewhere that the city saved nearly a million $ a day in wages, sure doesn't seem like we are getting our daily mill$ worth from these monkeys.

And what if the rest of us could stop work and demand that we have our jobs beyond the forseeable future, in addition to more money.

How come you can get towed faster than you can get a pizza here?

Want to see efficiency at its best in Vancouver? Just look at the tow industry. A fleet of shiny new tow trucks do the laps of the city all day long, all too ready to jump on their victims as the parking lanes change to roads. Parking is a premium in this city, and the city is extremely pro active about towing. I've been towed a total of twice in three years. Once in my building, for parking in someone elses place, (it was for 30 minutes) and I left a note on my window asking them to call me, (they decided it was a better idea to call a tow truck). second time i was trying to eat at the cactus club in burnaby, i parked in the office depot/tim hortons lot, and the bastards towed me, as a consequence my company has dropped all business with office depot.

So why can you get towed in 15mins, but have to wait 2-3 days for a passport? Why does it take 3 hours some weekends to get through the border? Why does it take 10 days for Telus to connect a phone line? I think if the city handed over operation of all of its projects to the tow truck companies, we'd all spend alot less time waiting to cross bridges (that should;ve been upgraded 20 years ago), denting our rims in any one of a thousand pot holes downtown...

Vancouver Police - Crime prevention or fund raising?

You cant help but be skeptical about the recent 'blitz' on Vancouver motorists. Police everywhere, writing tickets. Mostly to law abiding citizens, doing a few KM about the posted speed limits. It really pisses you off to think that we live in a city with incredible amounts of crime, both violent and property, and this is how they choose to allocate our police resources.

If you ask me, which is more urgent, the need to police roads or reduce crime, (thousands of people per month fall victim to vehicle theft alone in this city) the answer is obvious, the only reason the police are out harrassing working people is that the criminals dont have any money to pay fines.

Last week a friend of mine was stopped for making an illegal passage thru an intersection on a quiet street. The sign was obscured, and basically indicated that only buses could pass thru, all other traffic was to turn left. The real stink of the matter was, there were a total of 4 POLICE VEHICLES parked there, writing tickets out. This is an intersection 3 blocks off of West Georgia in the quiet substreets of Coal Harbour... now you tell me what was this about, public safety or filling quotas?

The good news is my friend pulled his New Zealand drivers license out, so the police have about as much chance of getting their money, as we all do of being safe from criminals, so long as there is money to be made from the people they should be protecting.

Vancouver - best city in the world to live in...

So, dont let it be said i never have anything positive to say. The BBC just aired a report on how Vancouver was assessed as the best city in the world to live in. Pretty amazing, and not hard to believe when you look around...

But lets not be too quick to pat ourselves on the back. Until the authorities do something about the crime/drug problem, we have to consider that the state of many of the people who live on the streets is an appauling embarrasment. Given the taxes that we pay here I think we all deserve a little more.

Eat shit, or at least tread in it...

Well Vancouverites are definitely some of the most dog lovingess people on the face of the earth. Dogs are absolutely everywhere you go, everyone has them, and god help you if you dont like them. Let me start by stating that I like dogs. The love affair the people in this city have with dogs goes beyond normal however, and now its gotten to the point where it is beginning to take its toll on life in this city.

First of all, there are the morons who own massive dogs, and live in small apartments. There should be a law against this, some form of animal cruelty. Then there are the people who insist on owning the vicious kind of dogs, (such as the rock weiler and pit bulls) to which this city has still not taken the urgent steps of banning. Thankfully my strata has just banned these dogs along with a few other vicious breeds. Then there are the kind that constantly stink, because they are washed enough, and they parade through the apartment buildings stinking up the place.

Then, and these are the most annoying people, the ones who dont pick up after their pets. They believe for some reason that the rest of us enjoy walking around stepping in dog shit when we are playing in the park. When our kids want to play in the grass, even when we are walking on the sidewalk.

I urge all of you who along with me, dont have a problem with dogs, only inconsiderate idiotic owners who dont clean up after their animals, next time you witness an act of vandalism on our parks/sidewalks or streets to engage the owner and instruct them to clean up the mess their animal has made.

If you are walking through any of the many parks and sidewalks in this city with your children, or thinking of laying a picnic out in the grass, look out for the shit that is slowly turning our neighborhoods into animal sewer grounds....

IKEA Coquitlam / Highway 1 Rant.

Okay, i go to IKEA once a year, and thats it. I dont like their stuff, but more importantly I dont like the experience. What a nightmare, especially at the coquitlam location on the weekend.

Oh my god, do you think for 1 second, that there is anyone in this city responsible for planning roads/access ways that has a clue what they are doing? The IKEA coquitlam store is the largest retail store in the province, and have you seen the access roads. Take a look at this image from google maps.

The large buiding you see on the right with a wave through it is IKEA, the exit point for Highway1 you can see to the left, doesn't take you to IKEA, but to an access road, for lougheed highway, which then allows you to skirt the outer perimeter of IKEA, and enter the parking lot through another access road. Can you imagine what kind of hell this creates on the weekends when thousands upon thousands of shoppers descend into Coquitlam in order to get a $1 breakfast, or 300 sawdust hotdogs for $1.50???

South for Summer? Get in line.

Now i know a lot of people are going to say, the delays and lineups at the border aren't always or entirely the fault of the Canadians, and I agree, both parties are equally at fault for providing a service which is completely inadequate, however it is another anoying aspect of life in Vancouver, and thats what this blog is all about.

If you're in the US as much as I am, trying to avoid the crazy local prices here, or enjoy a decent restaurant, or find a cool bar to sit and chill in (thats right Seattles bars are so much cooler than Vancouvers), then you've problably been through the Peace Arch or Pacific Crossing at some point or other.

What an organizational fuckup. Unless you're there at some ungodly time of the morning or night, prepare yourself for a wait, in either direction. It seems now that the communication/co-operation between both sides is so limited that last weekend, they were unable to avoid doing roadworks on the US side at Pacific Crossing, and construction on the Canada side at Peace Arch, the result? Lineups and delays and waits of 2 or more hours.

With the Canadian dollar where it is right now more and more people are heading south to spend, only problem is, we the travellers are the only ones who have seemed to notice. There has been little in the way of additional resources put in place to deal with the summer traffic in either direction.

iPhone in Canada? Yeah right...

Well with the launch of the iPhone in the US today, it leaves many of us wondering WTF? Most of us all live within 100 KM of the US border, so the question is what gives. Why aren't rogers offering the iphone here, why haven't they even announced it? The answer as usual is confusing and less than clear. While we can assume its a case of a combination of the following:
1. Licensing deals with Apple Canada/Rogers, trying to get it at a price point where they can gouge the Canadian consumers, and still make alot of money.
2. The fact that they only just released last years technology, and they dont want a newer better phone on the market to compete with that.
3. Probably some crappy govt rules about the device having to have FRENCH instructions included.
4. The CRTC has decided that they need to test the device for 3 months before they approve a license for it to be sold.

Victoria BC- not worth it - at all.

Took the family and some visitors from home to Victoria a week or 2 ago for a day trip. What a waste of a day and of money. I'm sorry but what a completely boring destination, there was absolutely nothing to do except walk along the front of the government building, along the pier, look at the hotel where the queen stays, have some food and go home.

Vancouver Island, for those of you who dont know is a huge island off the coast of BC, that is more than 400 km from north to south. There is a large population of people living there scattered across many towns/cities. Some of these places have even more crime than Vancouver believe it or not, nonetheless, at the bottom, closest to Vancouver is Victoria, which is unbelieably actually the capital of BC. Its positioned as a great tourist destination in itself.

The cost to get to this sh*thole at the end of Vancouver Island? This is the fun bit... one way its $37.75 per vehicle, and then a further $10.25 for each passenger!!! It cost us $78.00 plus taxes EACH WAY, thats $160 to visit Victoria on a day trip. Lets just imagine what else you could do with $160...

Needless to say we wont be back again, but it wasn;t like we weren't looking for other stuff to do. First of all we wanted to see the Titantic exhibition at the local museum, the signs were up, come on it we said. So we paid our money and went in. "Wheres the Titanic exhibition?" i said to the guard. "Oh that doesn't open until Monday" came the reply. I promptly turned around and went straight back to the cashier and demanded a refund, apparently it had been happening all day. Why did the sign not indicate when the Titanic exhibit opens? Why, can you imagine what % of people ask for their money back?

First on anyones list of things to do in Victoria is visit some gardens...sounds hilarious right? Well having been there these gardens are nice, they have been landscaped into some old mine or something. But how nice are gardens really, once you've been there for 10 -15 mins its like, OK its nice, can we go. But this is the main place that they tell you to see, so once you've finished here its all over. Do you know how much it costs to see the Bushart Gardens in Victoria - this is the kicker $25 per adult!!! Dont believe me have a look here on there own web page....http://www.butchartgardens.com/admission/rates.php
So for 4 adults to walk around some gardens, that were supposedly donated by the people who owned them back in 1800 and whenever, it costs $100. Are you fcuking serious???

Take my advice people, give this place a miss, especially for day trips. If you are planning on going further into Vancouver Island sure drive through and wave, but other than filling up with gas, i wouldn't waste anytime here, or money for that point.

French anyone?

Whats more anoying than having to turn the labels on items around in the super market because they are in F*CKING french? Not much, except waiting for new products to come to canada, (when they are already in the US) because the manufacturers are forced to label everything in both english and french. WTF? I have been in Vancouver 3 years and haven't met 1 person who cant speak english...why do we have to suffer then and put up with french labels on everything? well its pretty simple...at its core it provides another method for canadian vendors to insulate themselves from competition in the US. think about it, we live 60km from the largest market in the world, as consumers do we really benefit from it? - NO. The canadian producers, who cant compete and provide us with goods and services at reasonable prices, seek to protect themselves from the US market by asking the government to support legislation that forces produces to use 2 languages...Yes alot of the products out there are US products, but bear in mind they are produced especially for the canadian market and sold to us by canadian distributors at higher prices. If someone wants to speak to the french market let them decide, why force all of us to pay more for some pathetic chest beating holier than thou token policy to satisfy the fcking quebecors? why because of money...

Drugs easier to buy than a six pack in Vancouver?

Tell me, is it logical that there be legislation, taxes and licenses which prevent honest law abiding citizens from purchasing LEGAL items like liquor at convenient times of the day (ie after 7pm) at reasonable prices, when i can step out and buy drugs anytime, anywhere with little to no fear of prosecution.

Believe it or not, in Vancouver its actually easier to purchase drugs, particulary marajuana, than liquor. With the heavily regulated alcohol industry here, the state owned liquor stores run hours that closely shadow post offices. When ever you need some, there's never any store open. This is maddenning and ridiculous in a city where you can get just about any drug any where at any time. In typical fashion, again the innocent people are over policed and over taxed, while the criminals suffer no ills, and laugh at the rest of us.

Crime and the City

Most cities have their share of crime...but none of them seem to accept it so much as Vancouver does. Here because of the warmer weather out west we get more than our share of the destitute. With the destitute come the drugs, and with drugs come crime. With Canadas lenient laws which seem to do their best to put criminals back out on the streets again, despite countless reoffences, it seems no one is amazed and shocked that these people are free to run around and commit crimes, and the public are only to happy to accept it since, "well it was the drugs".

check this out: www.baitcar.com, a website setup by the authorities here to publisize a program to deter car theft. have a look at this one in particular http://baitcar.com/video/oncoming . This individual has 123 convictions against him between 97 and 04, and yet he is still not incarcerated!!! What are the authorities doing here to protect the innocent civilians??? This individual has stolen more than 1000 vehicles... and guess what his sentence was.... 4 years... and now guess what...he's writing a book!!! http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/story.html?id=a1d44b96-645d-468f-8a8c-65910351e4c1

http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/story.html?id=46394c1e-a2fa-401c-8017-b18659a14811

And now he's made out to be some kind of hero... Lets not forget, he's an adult who made choices and endangered the lives of everyone.

Vancouver has the hightest rates of car theft in North America...resulting in the most insane insurance premiums imaginable. But wheres the uproar? Where are the activist groups? The funny thing is, I would be in more trouble if i were doing 15km/h above the speed limit, than I would be if I were caught selling drugs on hastings st here..... for me speeding would incur a fine or $100 or more, and possibly increased premiums on my drivers license. for a drug dealer, police pretty much just ignore them, as they operate on the doorstep of the cities largest police office on main st without any fear...

The road to Vancouver...

Well like the they say… if you build it, they will come. It seems in Vancouver with respect to road infrastructure, it’s almost happened in reverse. Despite the swelling population sprawling east toward the fraser valley, and the growing population to the north, the city has done little to nothing to address the ongoing traffic issues which now plague this relatively small city. Vancouver is small city, and while geographically we may be challenged by the many waterways and mountains that surround us, we shouldn’t have traffic problems as big as we do. I’ve lived in Sydney, (a city with between 4-5 million people) more than twice the size of Vancouver, and yet we have as bad if not worse congestion in major thru ways. So what’s the problem?

Incredibly poor planning and management by city councils, who have essentially ignored the issue to this day, in combination with over zealous activists who protest any rock you move, are largely to blame for the poor state of Vancouver’s urban road system. Vancouver’s residents are extremely willing to protest or raise up a stink about just about anything, roads, bridges and buildings. And the city has been slow to push vital developments through the bureaucratical processes and hurdles, ensuring the new suburban developments and the 10’s of thousands of new residents they bring have access to roads and highways. Particularly to those areas east of the city, creating a huge bottleneck on Highway 1 at the Portman bridge and north to the Lions Gate bridge, a major thru way connecting the city with North Vancouver, West Vancouver and beyond to Whistler.

Despite the infrastructure being completely inadequate by any standard, the activists have so far stifled any plans to expand the bridge (often claiming it will encourage people to over populate these areas).

Many of these issues should have been addressed in the late sixties, and seventies when most governments in north America were busy planning intricate freeways, bypasses and tunnels to divert traffic and provide adequate passageways for commuters traveling into and out of cities. But Vancouver missed this vital window in the mid 70’s and has done little to address the issues since.

The current infrastructure is barely coping, yet the population continues to expand, so the obvious question is what about public transport? You would assume if you were going to ignore the roadway requirements of a population, that you would do it in favor of developing public transport infrastructure, well Vancouver hasn’t really even done that. The city is pretty much void of a rail transit system, save for a almost ‘toy like’ monorail system which is little more than a hub to hub link for people living within very specific areas of Burnaby, Vancouver and soon to be Richmond. The bus system is a joke as you go east, and getting to your destination can often mean a series of complicated changes and lengthy rides.

In addition to the lack of public transit options, lack of roads, bridges and tunnels the problem compounds when the roads that are in place have been left to decay to a state where you actually damage your vehicle by driving through the city. It’s true, the pot holes alone are enough to drive all urban dwellers to SUV’s. The city seems incapable of making any plans or scheduling work, as one day they will lay a new road down and the next, some developer will dig it up to lay a pipe, then patch it again, then dig it up again, and patch it again. These points at which the road is patched are often the worst, as the people responsible for filling holes and repaving roads seem incapable of making a transition between two surfaces which when driven over does not result in your being ejected through your vehicles roof.

Now the problem is of course that the cost of addressing these issues, is monumental, as real estate and construction costs have surged, the city can almost not afford to address the problem, but can they afford to leave it any longer? One thing is for certain, people will continue to come to Vancouver, but the question is how will they get around once they get here?

More Taxes/Fees and Charges.

http://www.encorp.ca/cfm/index.cfm?It=925&Id=48

Yep, they've done it again people, the good folks in charge of solving our problems seem to only have one solution to anything. that is, slap a tax on it, then set up some monopolistic company to profit from and get rich on a poorly organized govt initiative, on the backs of BC's consumers. This time its electronics. The BC government have just established a new tax or fee on electronic goods like computers and tvs. The charge is $15 for a CPU and $5 for a laptop.

If you are like me, you dont buy anything here anyway, (i buy almost all my electronics in the US) i recently even purchased a 50" plasma down there and brought it back in myself, saving tax, saving hundreds of dollars, and now saving myself some communisitic recycling fee...

I am all for recycling and giving the environment a break, but this doesn't solve problems, all this will do is drive consumers costs up, and ensure that some politicians brother, (who runs the program) will profit and get to drive around in a car that their own education level could never afford.

make the business of recycling attractive, by giving tax breaks to companies who offer it, setup some compeitition, encourage industry and commerce to meet the challenges...nope all of that too hard, the easy answer, slap a tax on it, this year it's $15, in 5 years it will $100....when the lame asshole running the recycling plant can't do it on budget...
